The Enermodal Green Advantage

For 30 years, Enermodal Engineering has been Canada’s leader in the design of sustainable, energy-efficient buildings and communities. Experience the Enermodal advantage that starts at project inception and extends beyond certification to ensure actual building performance.

Worth our Weight in Gold (or Higher)

Many consultants claim to have LEED project experience - but few have actually completed the job and received formal certification from the Canada Green Building Council. In fact, of the over 1400 building registered with the CaGBC, only 10% have received certification. As a LEED consultant, Enermodal is the exception. We have certified over 55 buildings (five times more than any other consultant) and have a further 200 in progress. With government funding and local regulations increasingly demanding a LEED rating, hiring Enermodal virtually eliminates the risk of not receiving certification.

Enermodal has a particularly strong track record when it comes to achieving the highest level of LEED: over 50% of our certifications are at the Gold or Platinum level. So, if the marketing advantage of LEED is important, then trust the consultant who is best able to get you there.

Genuine Commitment

Since sustainability is the hot trend in the building industry, nearly every consultant is painting themselves green. However, Enermodal shows its true (green) colours by its deeds: We only work on green projects. In fact, we are now the largest consultant dedicated exclusively to creating green buildings and communities. This commitment means that we have an interest to making all our projects as sustainable as possible, with the lowest energy use and environmental impact.

Beyond our day-to-day work, we believe in and support the LEED Green Building System. Enermodal experts serve as LEED trainers and chair the CaGBC Technical Advisory Group. In addition, Enermodal is the consultant delivering the upcoming revision of the LEED-NC rating system. We know the LEED system intimately well: all our offices (Kitchener, Calgary, Denver, and Toronto) are LEED Platinum certified or candidates.

Innovative and Practical Solutions

Enermodal Engineering has a team of mechanical/electrical engineers and technologists with decades of experience in innovative solutions to energy and water efficiency. Many technologies pioneered by Enermodal are now in more common use: rainwater cisterns, ground source heat pumps, and solar energy systems, to name but a few. We continue to encourage the use of innovations such as insulated concrete form construction, variable flow refrigerant systems, displacement ventilation, and chilled beams.

Our experience with these innovative and practical solutions means that we know what works and what merely sounds good. Our green design facilitators spot design flaws and opportunities early in the design process when improvements or corrections can be made easily and inexpensively.

Taking Projects All the Way

While the service rendered by LEED consultants may seem the same on the surface, the reality is that the scope of work purchased by clients can vary drastically. Success in achieving a LEED rating requires that proper attention be paid to the documentation and submission process. Many consultants offload the majority of the analysis and documentation work onto other members of the design team. This can delay certification, add to project costs, and can sometimes jeopardize certification altogether.

At Enermodal, our LEED project managers take full responsibility for the LEED certification process. Our commitment to our clients includes completing all LEED Letter Templates, overseeing all aspects of certification, submitting this certification to the CaGBC, and answering all questions and reviews by CaGBC staff.

Delivered Performance: Comprehensive and Integrated Green Building Design

Enermodal is a “one-stop shop” for the design and operation of sustainable buildings. We offer the most comprehensive set of green building services on the market:

  • LEED design and certification
  • energy modelling
  • building envelope evaluation and testing
  • mechanical/electrical design
  • building commissioning
  • building performance monitoring and optimization

Having one firm bring all of these skills to the design process early on helps to simplify the design process and ensures an integrated team. Employing fewer consultants can result in a less expensive process because important tasks are not forgotten. Experience shows that when Enermodal provides a full suite of services to a LEED project team, the resulting building performs better.

Enermodal has decades of experience in making buildings work the way they are supposed to work. That means our Delivered Performance service continues after the LEED plaque is on the wall. Our commissioning team ensures that operational deficiencies are identified and corrected promptly, that building operation staff properly trained, and that building owners get the best performing building possible. Our building monitoring experts make sure that the correct meters for energy and water use are installed in the right place and deliver the needed information on time. Our monitoring service has fine-tuned building systems so that they perform above and beyond expectation.

“I have key members of our staff that ask me, project after project, to bring in Enermodal whenever we have an energy management or green building project. They enjoy working with your staff, are impressed with your team’s professionalism, and are happy with the end result. How can I tell them no?”

Mario Petricevic,
Manager of Projects and Energy Management

“It’s one thing to design a green office. It’s quite another to achieve a Platinum LEED rating at an artisan cheese dairy with complex building and dairy processing requirements. Enermodal’s integrated range of services and experience with the LEED certification process gave us the confidence that, together, we could achieve our ultimate goal.”
